Website Design: How To Use Links On Your Web Site Part Ii

First of all, let us consider your navigation links. What are they for, and are you using them for that purpose? Where do you have them on your page and are they in the best place? Forgetting for a moment what they are for, consider the psychology in the placement of your links.

People generally do not like to see adverts on a web page. They don’t mind Google Adwords on the right hand side of a Google search because they have come to expect that, and realize that Google has to make money to provide the services that they do. However, they psychologically expect links on the right hand side of a web page to be adverts. That’s Tip Number 1 – do not place your navigation links on the right hand side of your page unless they are obviously not adverts. You do not want to confuse your visitors.

You frequently see text links across the top of the web page just above the main body text. That’s fine, as long as you understand what you are doing, and what search engines are looking at. Do you really want the spiders checking these links out so early in your site? How about the left hand side? A lot depends on how you design your site – using tables or CSS (cascading style sheets). Most people use a tabular design and have a left hand navigation table then a central content table, then a right hand table that might contain navigation again, or some Adsense or other information.
