Types:
The skilled ultrasound technician has the freedom for specializing in various areas like the heart, female reproductive system, eyes, brain and the organs which are found in the stomach. These technicians generally work in the physician's office or in the hospital environment where the responsibilities of the ultrasound technician include the performing sonograms, explaining procedures to the patients, interpreting resulting images and then maintaining the patient and equipment records.
Function:
Ultrasounds are also called as ultrasonography and sonography. It is an imaging type which is used for diagnosing various medical conditions. Transducer is the equipment used in the technique and is a special electronic instrument for generating the sound wave which travels through patient's body by producing series of echoes when they collide with the targeted body parts or the internal organs. Echoes will then be transformed into the visual images on the screen which the technician and the other medical personnel study to verify the problems in the patient’s body to continue with the process.
Credential:
The ultrasound technician need not be licensed to practice in a particular state. However the certification and registration as the ultrasound technician through the ARDMS demonstrate the higher training degrees which the employers generally appreciate in the individuals. These individuals have better chances of improving the opportunities for expanding the career and the earning potentials.
Training:
Numerous ways are available for obtaining the training which is required for the successful career in the ultrasound technology. Most of the individuals complete the 2 year degree course in the ultrasound technology or the equivalent subject at accredited vocational institutes while the other pursue 4 year or 2 year degree programs at the traditional university or colleges which is followed by the relevant training in the hospital settings. Others acquire the training during the services in armed forces.
